She’d slept soundly and even rose a few hours late. No dreams or memories had jolted her awake. They may have been a mess still within her mind, but she appreciated the reprieve of a full night’s rest. It wouldn’t do her any good to miss tea—not with the guards out in full force looking for any suspicious activity. According to Meira, who took the chance to inform Felicity to be careful around the halls, the guards believed it was a male who had scaled the walls. Probably because they wouldn’t want to admit that a female could escape them. Let their egos cloud their judgment—it only helped Felicity, after all.

Everyone was present at tea, and the upcoming celebration for the king’s birthday was the main topic of conversation. While the females tittered about decor and the guest list, Felicity’s head pulsed—her magic becoming a living thing within her, testing her resolve. Her arm was nearly healed, the muscle uncomfortable and bruised, but by tomorrow, she should be able to remove the stitches. She wouldn’t have a choice but to train tonight, no matter how much she wanted to stay away from the prince. The thought of him had her magic spreading under her skin, and Felicity closed her eyes, willing a calmness.

“You had some luck with portions of the garden, it seems. Does that mean the king’s birthday celebration will take place here? I bet the weather that evening will be divine.” Lady Mistward fluttered her fan.

Why they still chose to sit out here, Felicity didn’t understand. The ocean breeze helped keep the bugs at bay, but it was doing little for the thickening heat—the last bit of summer trying to take its hold. The stubborn females wouldn’t budge though, no matter how quickly they fanned themselves or that warm tea was less than ideal. The benefit was the experience was shorter, so everyone could be inside before they passed out from the sun’s heat.

“The weather may be wonderful, but unfortunately, I do not think we will be able to. By tonight the gardens will once again be a mess. That’s not acceptable for our guests.” Queen Marquette sighed. “The ballroom will be a beautiful alternative with the view of the sea.”

Lady Grandeur nodded her agreement. “It will be wonderful no matter where it’s held, Your Majesty. Your events are always the envy of all the realms.”

Lady Chartow’s fan sped up, her lips a thin line. Felicity was certain word was spreading about the abductions, but none spoke of them at tea, and she wasn’t going to be the one to bring it up.

Tea ended shortly after. As everyone stood to head indoors, Queen Marquette brushed Felicity’s arm. “Will you walk with me, Lady Dwauer?”

Her head pounded, but Felicity knew she couldn’t deny the queen’s request. “Of course, Majesty.” The queen pulled Felicity’s arm through the crook of hers.

Lady Fiadh tilted her head in their direction, but the queen waved her away. It would be just the two of them then.
